Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, is one of the worst drug warriors in Congress. He almost single-handedly blocked mild sentencing reform bills that members of Congress from both parties supported. He opposes marijuana legalization and has even claimed that “good people don’t use marijuana.” If you support state-legal cannabis programs, call your elected senators to protest Jeff Sessions and urge them to take steps to safeguard legalization from federal interference.

Here’s how to call your senators– it’s the calls that most noticeably draw the attention of staffers and members of Congress. You can also send a message to your Senators telling them to oppose through the Drug Policy Alliance form here.

  • Find the phone numbers for your senator’s Washington, D.C. office and their in-state offices in the table below.
  • In a polite yet firm and concise manner, tell them you are against Sessions for Attorney General and follow the below script:
    • ‘As a voter in [your state], I am urging you to oppose Jeff Sessions’ nomination for Attorney General. As a [medical marijuana patient/cannabis consumer], I fear he will use his power to put an end to medical and adult use marijuana programs across the nation. He is racist, drug war extremist who will bring back militarized, drug war tactics and raids on marijuana businesses. He has already used his influence to try to demonize cannabis consumers when he said, “good people don’t smoke marijuana” and “that it is in fact a very real danger.” Jeff Sessions is not fit to serve as Attorney General and as your constituent I am strongly urging you to oppose his nomination.’

  • Make those calls! And implore you friends, family, loved ones, or like-minded political comrades to follow. If the Justice Department starts to signal a crackdown, call them again.
