Medical Marijuana Dispensary Opening in Hawaii

HONOLULU — Dispensary sales of medical marijuana in Hawaii are beginning after patients waited 17 years for a legal way to purchase the drug. Maui Grown Therapies received approval from the Department of Health to begin selling medical cannabis Tuesday. The dispensary sold medical marijuana to patients for two hours Tuesday, limiting their hours to help manage the new process, said Teri Freitas Gorman, director of community relations and patient affairs. “Clearly this is a historic day not just for Maui but for the state of Hawaii,” Freitas Gorman said. “This is the first time in Hawaii that patients will be...

Retail Marijuana Available Prior Recreational Cannabis Industry Launches

State lawmaker will introduce legislation to allow early marijuana sales. A Nevada lawmaker is working on a plan to make retail marijuana available to adults 21 and over long before the recreational cannabis industry launches in the summer of 2018. Although marijuana is about to enter into legal status all across the Silver State at the first of the year, people are still going to be forced to lean on the black market for smoke because the cannabis trade is not expected to be ready for at least another year. But, from a research perspective, how marijuana actually affects athletic performance remains to be seen. Even in states where the drug is legal, researchers may be hesitant to devote shrinking budgets to the topic or attach their names to this type of research. As views and attitudes continue to change, however, more well-designed and controlled studies may emerge. We do know, however, that everybody responds to marijuana use differently, and that the boom in production (at least publicly) has yielded tremendous variety in the strands of the drug, each of which likely carries its own unique effects and side effects. Here’s what else the limited available research suggests about how well (or poorly) marijuana affects different aspects of athletic performance: Pain Management Athletes often talk about marijuana as a pain reliever. They’re not wrong: In addition to offering actual pain management (hence its legalization medically in many places), marijuana appears to alter the emotional response to...
